SXSW'14 Day 1
SXSW'14 Day 1
March 09, 2014This post is a day late, however better late than never.
Wholly Burgers
The day started off at Wholly Burgers for some breakfast. I randomly found this place after a simple google search looking for breakfast in Austin. I arrived after a walk and asked them what is good for breakfast and decided on the French Toast. In what seemed to take a bit longer than it should have the breakfast food arrived and it was good. I will say the sausage patty was the best part.
SXXPress
After breakfast was obtained it was time to get to the SXXPress pass line in the hopes to get some passes so I don't have to wait in the long badge lines to see a few movies today. I arrived a little after 10am and was presented with no lines (good) however passes for Chef were all gone (oh no). I got in line anyways and made sure to secure my passes to Cosmos and 13 Sins
Lean UX
Now that the early morning activities where finished up time to get to my first session. A book reading from [Lean UX]. (http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920021827.do) This talk was short but was very insightful on how you can take agile approaches to design and how you can incorporate this ideas into your processes. This small taste on Lean UX brought me wanting more and I will soon be reading his book in the coming months.
BBQ Crash Course
I actually forgot I registered for this event during checkout last year until I saw it on the schedule. After my first session my only gap in time was now and I had to run over to get me some BBQ.
As you can see my plate was full, it was fuller but I managed to eat some while obtaining more BBQ. Everything was good, however for me the star of the plate was brisket from the various vendors.
5 Things Every Developer Needs to Know About Design
After stuffing my face I needed to rush over to the Radisson for my first full session.
A few take aways from this session notes...
Attractive things work better.
- Layout - order, variety, contrast, symmetry, tension, balance (two different objects with the same weight), scale, (you don't have to make big to increase scale), texture, space. Stability body content. Excitement header Golden ratio,
- Using imagery, better to show than tell, leading the eye, pay attention to direction. Use icons and shapes, round things are easier to look at instead of sharp edges.
- Color, use to emphasis importance, not to just decorate a page, understand color intensity.
- Using Typography, serif fonts lead into each letter making it easier to read, sans good for adding emphasis very distinct letters. Serif for headings (slab, Rockwell), sans for body copy. Limit to no more than three fonts.
- Feedback, have others help you. Bēhance allows for new feedback and track some revisions.
Rich Web Experiences & the Future of the Web
This session turned out to be a crash course of all things new that are in the web.
- Clip paths, can transition and alter interfaces. Revel and hide content
- Mask images, allows for textures on top of content
- Blend modes, background image blend modes with multiple background images. (Experimental)
- Filters, saturate, contrast, blur, etc. filters can be stacked
- Vector, images sag a few libraries noted are Raphaël.js (compatibility) d3.js (graph and dats), snap.js (new modern svg)
- 2d canvas, easel.js, processing.js, pixi.js
- Voice, API for interesting navigation options.
- Webgl, a few libraries noted are three.js, Babylon.js, pixi.js
- Video,
- Sprite Sheets, combine images lower requests
- Semantics, the mark up and the text in the document
- WebRTC, real time audio video chat This talk was ok, but was such a crash course in all things new and exciting it was hard for me to focus on a particular aspect and how I could utilize this in my day job.
Responsive Web Design When Things Are Teh Sux0r
This was my first workshop and while it was a goo refreshing I unfortunately was not exposed to new ideas or concepts. The workshop focused on responsive layouts and how you can utilize some core web design ideas to get your sites to the next level. The workshop was good, but just unfortunately not for me.
Chef
Now after my interactive sessions were over for the day time to go stand in line and try to get into see the movie Chef.
The line was long and went around the block but I was able to get in to see the movie.
Cosmos
This was an episode screening of the pilot and I will say I am excited to see more of what this show has to offer.
13 Sins
This was an unknown movie to me, but was intrigued by the plot. It was exciting to see the ever increasing tasks the main character had to preform to win the prize.
Sleep
It was a long day, so time to get some sleep
